Micro connectors commonly have a contact pitch of 1.27mm (0.05″), however the term is also used to describe connectors with other pitches such as 0.8mm (0.03″), 1mm (0.04″) or 2mm (0.079″). A wide variety of form factors are available, including rectangular, circular, and Micro-D. Micro connector contacts are arranged in one or more rows.
Connection mechanisms for plugs and receptacles include latching, push-pull, and screws, as well as twist-lock and bayonet for circular connectors. Micro connectors are manufactured with a variety of mounting options, such as flange mount, solder/weld receptacle, as well as surface mount technology (SMT)/ through hole technology (THT) for adding connectors to PCBs.
Micro Connectors and SWaP Contraints
Micro connectors are used in small UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and robotics applications, where size, weight, and power (SWaP) must be minimized. Connectors may be found in many of the vehicle’s subsystems, including power and signal distribution, cameras, sensors and actuation. Connectors for military UAVs will need to meet one or more of several military specifications, such as MIL-DTL-83513 for Micro-D connectors.
Connectors for military as well as other harsh environment applications will be IP-rated to particular standards, such as IP64, IP67, IP68, and IP69K. These connectors denote the connector’s level of resistance to dust and water ingress.
