GNSS.store outlines key types of positioning solutions, showing how Real Time Kinematic (RTK), autonomous methods, differential systems and Precise Point Positioning (PPP) approaches vary in accuracy, correction format and operational limits.
RTK is a relative positioning method that relies on a surveyed reference station transmitting measurements through radio or network links. Accuracy typically ranges from 4 to 25 millimeters CEP50 plus a distance dependent term. Single frequency RTK functions within about 10 to 20 kilometers because of ionospheric constraints, while dual frequency RTK extends to roughly 70 to 100 kilometers by reducing ionospheric influence.
Autonomous positioning computes location solely from satellite observations. Single frequency receivers usually achieve approximately 2.5 to 3 meters CEP50, and dual frequency units reduce error to roughly 1.2 to 1.5 meters CEP50 by internally compensating for ionospheric delay.
Differential systems generate corrections at known locations and broadcast them to other receivers. SBAS networks, including EGNOS, WAAS, MSAS, GAGAN, BDSBAS, SouthPAN and SDKM, typically deliver around 1.5 meters CEP50. Japan’s SLAS provides 30 to 70 centimeters CEP50, while coastal DGNSS services reach roughly one meter CEP50.
Commercial L band correction services such as StarFire, StarFix, OmniStar and Atlas support multi constellation receivers and can achieve centimeter scale performance for dual frequency hardware.
PPP uses global corrections representing satellite orbit, clock and antenna related parameters. Accuracy commonly ranges from 5 to 50 centimeters CEP50 following convergence periods of about ten to thirty minutes. PPP with Ambiguity r
Resolution (PPP AR) improves precision to roughly two to fifteen centimeters and reduces convergence time, with RTCM3 SSR and IGS SSR commonly used for online delivery.
Regional and commercial PPP AR services include SouthPAN PVS, Beidou PPP B2b, MADOCA PPP, Galileo HAS and the planned SVO EVI system.
PPP RTK incorporates tropospheric and ionospheric modeling to achieve one to six centimeters CEP50 with convergence near one minute. Services in this category include PointPerfect, CLAS, KPS CLS, TerraStar C Pro, CenterPoint RTX and Skylark.
